Bass guitar like the one played by Paul McCartney of the Beatles

And the Brand Played On

Exactly 44 years ago today (April 10), Sir Paul McCartney announced that the Beatles would go their separate ways. In the decades since, each member of the Fab Four forged his own unique brand of Rock and Roll. But none has matched the seismic impact that the mop-topped foursome had on American music and culture.

Ironically, it was six years to the week after the Beatles had taken over the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, with nine smash hits, five of which held the top five positions on that chart. That same week, the Beatles held both first and second position on Billboard’s top albums. And 50 years later, both feats remain unmatched.

Yet, despite their brief life as a group, the Beatles were no flash in the pan. Their recordings have resonated with each subsequent generation, and their musical styles – indeed, they had many styles – have influenced countless musicians.

As leaders of this generation of businesses, schools, nonprofit organizations, and more, any of us would do well to leave behind such a lasting legacy. Surprisingly, the formula for their success remains both visible and relevant to the tasks before us: practice, experiment, collaborate, innovate, have fun… What lessons will you draw from the greatest band in rock history? Whatever your challenge, may the brand play on.
